An ice cream shop known for its “Chimney Cones” is celebrating a re-opening with free treats next week.

Eva’s Original Port Credit at 53 Lakeshore Rd. E. has changed hands with new franchisee, Jose Zepada taking over, Eva’s Original announced in a press release.

Zepada moved to Canada from Mexico in November 2016 to study English, and began working part-time serving at Eva’s in 2017.  A year later he was promoted to store manager and then in 2019 to operations manager, looking after ordering and inventory for all of Eva’s locations.

When Eva’s began to franchise, Zepada expressed interest in Port Credit.

“I come from an entrepreneurial family and owning and growing my own business has been a dream of mine,” says Zepada.

“Eva’s was a natural step due to my familiarity with the team and the amazing opportunities I see in Port Credit. My parents have been an amazing support and I know I will be working closely with both my family in Mexico and the Eva’s family here.”

The original owners will be working closely with Zepada as Eva’s expands with franchising across Canada.

“When I first met Jose we weren’t actually hiring but he made such an impression on me that we brought him on anyway,” says Kristin Finley, co-founder of Eva’s. “He quickly became a staple of Eva’s culture – his humour and work ethic are admired by colleagues and customers alike, and he could teach a course on how to roll a Chimney Cone!”

The grand re-opening of the Port Credit Eva’s is slated for Thursday, June 1.

The first 35 customers at Eva’s Port Credit on June 1 Eva’s Port Credit will get a free Chimney Cone. The shop opens at noon.

“Get there early as they will go fast,” the release notes.

The Chimney Cone is a bread-like, freshly baked pastry with a hollow, cylindrical shape. They have a crunch on the outside and a soft, fluffy dough on the inside.

The Port Credit location also serves vegan burgers and tacos. The location has plenty of indoor seating.
