Four outdoor skating rinks in Pickering now open

The frigid weather now gripping the region may not warm the hearts of everyone but it has certainly helped with the outdoor skating season in Pickering as four of the city’s seven outdoor rinks are ready to go and opened for skating Friday morning.
The rinks at Rick Hull Memorial Park, Forestbrook Park, Whitevale Park and Frenchman’s Bay Rate Payers Memorial Park all opened at 9 a.m. for leisure skating and will remain open until 5 p.m. each day, weather permitting.
Outdoor rinks at Claremont Memorial Park, Greenwood Park, and Centennial Park are still closed at this time.
Two of the rinks (Centennial Park, under the picnic shelter – 35 x 65 ft – and Frenchman’s Bay Rate Payers Memorial Park – 55 x 65 ft) are new this year.
Each rink is fenced and secured, with picnic tables and garbage cans in range and are inspected daily.
All outdoor rinks are for leisure skating only. No hockey, ringette or other sports will be allowed on the rinks.

Pickering, like most other communities with natural ice rinks, had to wait for consistent cold weather to open the rinks as the ground must be frozen and the weather must remain below -4º (24ºF) for several consecutive days before attempting to build ice.
