Four deaths added to weekly COVID totals in Durham Region, including two more from Ajax

Four more deaths were added to this week’s COVID count, including three more Wednesday, bringing the total number of deaths from the virus to ten in the past six days and 416 since the pandemic was declared.

Two of the deaths were traced to Ajax.

On the bright side, the active case count continues to fall, dropping 425 yesterday to 2,490. That number has fallen by more 6,000 since Sunday when there were 8,567 active cases. New cases fell as well, with 165 reported yesterday, down from 220 on Wednesday.

There are 139 people in the hospital with the virus with 16 in ICU and 50 under investigation.

Outbreaks in retirement homes are stable at 33, with 128 people isolating. The biggest outbreaks are at Hillsdale Estates (25), Bay Ridges (19), Orchard Villa (16), Lakeridge Health Ajax-Pickering (15) and Abbeylawn Manor (11).

The percentage of 12-plus residents in Durham who are at least double vaccinated stands at 88.4. For the 5-11 demographic, 51.6 per cent have now received their first shot while 14.7 have taken their second jab as well.
