A Fort Erie man was charged yesterday (January 13) after stealing pot from a cannabis store only to be found a few blocks away, trying to smoke the evidence.

Niagara Police were called to the Village Cannabis Co. store on Ridgeway Road in Fort Erie at about 3:35 pm and discovered a man had come into the store to purchase some product. The problem was the debit card he was using wouldn’t work.

So he jumped behind the counter, shoving one employee and taking a swing at another. He bolted after taking some of the product. Neither employee was injured.

Officers found him “a short distance away” smoking the evidence in what could possibly be described as a series of small, self-contained fires. Searching him, the police found the rest of the stolen pot.

Seth Curtis Woelke, 22, of Fort Erie was charged with robbery and failing to comply with a probation order.

He was held in custody and attended a video bail hearing yesterday in St. Catharines.
