A  Mississauga student accused in a plot to kill Jewish people in New York has agreed to be extradited to the United States.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) says Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, 21, a citizen of Pakistan who once lived in Mississauga has consented to the extradition order.

Khan was scheduled to have an extradition hearing today in Montreal but agreed to surrender to U.S. authorities to answer terror-related charges. He had been arrested in Quebec last September following an alleged plot to kill Jews on behalf of the Islamic State.

The DOJ said that Khan, also known as Shahzeb Jadoon, was allegedly planning the attack last Oct. 7.

At that time the DOJ said he was arrested thanks to “quick action” by Canadian law enforcement, including the RCMP and a national GTA law enforcement team comprised of Peel Regional Police and other forces.

The FBI played a lead role in the larger investigation.

Prior to his arrest, Khan had been living in Mississauga since 2023 when he arrived on a student visa.

U.S. authorities allege that Khan intended to use “automatic and semi-automatic weapons” in a shooting at a Jewish centre in Brooklyn. The FBI became aware of the activities through pro-Islamic State messages found on Facebook.

He was arrested in Ormstown, Que., on his way to New York and was charged with one count of attempting to provide material support and resources to a terrorist organization and attempted acts of terrorism transcending national boundaries.

The RCMP has said they conducted an investigation into Khan in partnership with the FBI and, “that as his actions escalated, at no point in time was Khan an immediate threat prior to his arrest.”
