Mississauga MP guilty

A former Mississauga MP says he was scammed out of millions of dollars himself before he received a six-month conditional sentence and was fined by an Ontario Court judge this week.

Wajid Khan, 75, who served as both a Liberal and Conservative Member of Parliament for the riding of Mississauga-Streetsville from 2004 to 2008, was given the sentence after pleading guilty to an offence under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.

Khan was initially charged after an RCMP investigation found that during bankruptcy hearings he claimed a $15 million promissory note as an asset even though he knew it was worthless.

Criminal charges against Khan had previously been withdrawn.

During his sentencing, Khan said his dealings with another man, who was subsequently found guilty of fraud, led him to lose the life savings he had built up during a successful career as an owner of a car dealership.

A conditional sentence means the offender serves his time outside of jail, but under strict conditions.
