Former Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion receives early greetings for 101st birthday

Former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion doesn’t celebrate her 101st birthday until Monday, Feb. 14, but that didn’t stop some from kicking things off Saturday afternoon.

McCallion served as Mississauga’s mayor for 36 consecutive years, from 1978 until her retirement in 2014. She is currently the first chancellor of Sheridan College and has been awarded both the Order of Ontario and Order of Canada.

McCallion was was visited by Mississauga’s current mayor, Bonnie Crombie, as well as representative from both the Peel Regional Police and Mississauga Fire Department at her Mississauga home.

Throughout her career in politics, McCallion has been a vocal supporter of the city, renowned for saying “Mississauga is the greatest city in the world.”

Growing up, she was a professional hockey player and has been a staunch supporter of women’s hockey for decades.
