Canadian basketball player and former Hamilton Honey Badgers forward Kenny Ejim was found dead in his Juffair hotel apartment Tuesday (Feb. 15) at the age of 27.

Ejim had been playing pro basketball in Bahrain, Western Asia for Al-Najma.

The cause of death is under investigation.

The body of the Brampton, Ontario native was reportedly discovered by hotel staff after Ejim failed to show up to his team’s practice.

“The Hamilton Honey Badgers organization is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Kenny Ejim, a valued member of our team during the 2021 season and a friend to many in the Canadian basketball community,” reads an official statement from the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) club.

“Kenny brought a high level of energy to our organization on and off the court, and he was an exceptional teammate. Kenny had a smile that could light up an arena. He invested in himself as a player and as a person, while always making time to lift up those around him,” the Honey Badgers added. “It is incomprehensible that such a bright, strong and driven young man would have his life end.”

Kenny Ejim’s brother, Ryan, also played for the Honey Badgers. He is currently under contract with the Fraser Valley Bandits.

“Our deepest condolences go out to Kenny’s brother Ryan who played for our team in 2019 and to all of his family and friends. He will be greatly missed and remembered with much love and respect,” the Honey Badgers said.

Kenny Ejim played 42 games over three seasons at Humber College in Etobicoke, Ontario. He averaged 22.1 points per game in his final year (2017-18) for the Hawks.

The six-foot-six forward also played pro basketball in Spain.
