Former Brampton Conservative MP candidate Jermaine Chambers is the latest contender in Brampton’s mayoral race.

Chambers, a mortgage agent and financial advisor, ran for the Conservatives in the riding of Brampton West in the 2021 federal election but lost to incumbent Liberal MP Kamal Khera.

Khera won the riding with 25,780 votes according to Elections Canada, while Chambers was a distant second with 13,186 votes.

Chamber’s campaign website says he is a university graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management, and is running for mayor “to make Brampton better” with a platform of creating jobs and helping businesses.

A website operated by the Campaign Life Coalition which tracks political candidates’ positions on abortion and euthanasia rated Chambers as a “pro-life” candidate in the 2021 federal election.

As of July 13, there are only two other candidates for mayor in Brampton aside from Chambers – Vidya Sagar Gautam, a previous candidate for Regional Councillor and Peel Regional Chair, and 23-year-old electrician and local political watcher Cody Vatcher.

According to a post on Twitter, Chambers has endorsed MP Leslyn Lewis in the Conservative Party of Canada leadership race – a contest current Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown was disqualified from last week.

Brown has yet to announce whether he will seek re-election in Brampton, and potential candidates in the October municipal election have until Aug. 19 to file their nomination paperwork.
