The first-ever electric police car in Ontario will soon be patrolling the streets of Mississauga and Brampton.

Peel Regional Police said today (April 22) they have just received delivery of their first three fully electric police cruisers, all of them 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-SR all-wheel drives. A fourth vehicle, the same model, has been ordered and the cruisers will soon be tested on the road in a pilot study.

Before the vehicles can hit the streets for duty, though, they must first be “up-fitted with police equipment,” Peel police say, adding that will take a few weeks.

Police say they received the new electric vehicles just in time for Earth Day, which is being marked around the world today.

“This (electric police cruiser) is the first in a pilot project in which we are determining the requirements and feasibility of expanding electric vehicles throughout our fleet,” Mark Figueiredo, director of materials management for Peel police, said in a news release.

In addition to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, an all-electric vehicle also offers significant fuel and maintenance cost savings, police say.

The introduction of electric vehicles to the Peel police fleet is part of a larger commitment by the Region of Peel to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 45 per cent below 2010 levels by 2030.

Peel police say the new additions to their fleet mark the next step for them after they became one of the first police forces in Canada to introduce hybrid vehicles in 2020. They’ve been using a number of fully marked Ford Interceptor hybrid electric police cruisers for the past two years.

Police brass say the Peel force is committed to reducing its carbon footprint.

“Electric vehicles are a great way to lower greenhouse gas emissions as well as reduce air pollution in our community. This pilot project is underway to evaluate these electric vehicles as police vehicles, which have unique requirements including 24/7 availability, specialized interior and exterior up-fitting equipment as well as heightened safety and crash ratings,” police said in the news release.

The 2021 Mustang Mach-E SUV was the first all-electric vehicle to pass the rigorous Michigan State Police 2022 model year evaluation, Peel police say.

That evaluation included acceleration, top speed, braking and high-speed pursuit, as well as emergency response handling characteristics, they added.

Michigan State Police is one of two law enforcement agencies that annually test new model year police vehicles and publish the results for use internationally.

Based on those results, Peel police said they made the decision to order the four Mustang police cruisers.
