Floods possible as Hurricane Beryl remnants expected in Milton, Oakville, Burlington

The remains of Hurricane Beryl are expected to roll through Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills beginning early Wednesday, July 10.

Environment Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry Surface Water Monitoring Centre are forecasting the remnants of Hurricane Beryl will bring heavy rainfall across southwestern Ontario early Wednesday and continue into Thursday.

“Currently, total rainfall amounts in excess of 50 mm are possible. Although soil conditions are dry within our jurisdiction, intense downpours may produce significant localized runoff,” reads the warning.

“Widespread flooding is not anticipated, however, fast flowing water and flooding of low-lying areas, natural floodplains, and areas with poor drainage may be expected.”0

Conservation Halton is asking all residents and children to keep a safe distance from all watercourses and structures such as bridges, culverts, and dams. Elevated water levels, fast flowing water, and slippery conditions along stream banks continue to make these locations extremely dangerous. Please alert children in your care of these imminent dangers.

Conservation Halton will continue to monitor stream and weather conditions and will issue an update to this Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook message as conditions warrant.

This flood outlook will be in effect through Saturday July 13.
