WestJet has resumed weekly non-stop flights from Pearson Airport in Mississauga to Antigua and Barbuda after more than a year of interrupted service due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Calgary-based carrier will operate the Sunday flights until December, when service to the Caribbean vacation spot will be increased to twice a week.

In a show of how much the service was missed, dignitaries in Antigua and Barbuda welcomed the first flight and its passengers back to the tiny island nation earlier this week.

Located right where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea, Antigua and Barbuda is comprised of its two namesake islands and several smaller ones.

It’s known for reef-lined beaches, rainforests and resorts.

The country’s tourism minister called the renewed service great news, as Canada is a key source market for Antigua and Barbuda.
