Flights at Toronto Pearson Airport in Mississauga “continue to operate normally” in the wake of Thursday morning’s deadly shooting in which police killed a 30-year-old man outside Canada’s biggest and busiest airport.
Airport officials said in a late-morning post to social media that travellers using Pearson on Thursday can rest assured flight operations are normal and that “there are no known threats to public safety.”
In a post to X (formerly Twitter), airport officials said “flights at Toronto Pearson continue to operate normally at this time. Please use the roadway to Terminal 1 Arrivals as the roadway to the Terminal 1 Departures remains closed for a Peel Regional Police investigation.”
They added “the parking garage in Terminal 1 remains open. Police say this is an isolated incident and there are no known threats to public safety. Passengers can also park at Terminal 3 and the Viscount Station Kiss and Fly lot and take the train to Terminal 1.”
Meanwhile, the province’s Special Investigations Unit, the civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving police that result in death or serious injury, is looking into the early morning shooting death of a 30-year-old man who initially appeared to be in distress when he was located by police officers.
Though details are far from complete, the SIU said Peel Regional Police officers were “investigating a man in distress in an SUV at Terminal 1 departures” shortly before 7 a.m. when “early information received indicates he produced a firearm.”
The man was then shot and pronounced dead at the scene, the SIU said in a news release.
The agency added no police officers were injured during the shooting and there is no threat to the public.
Six investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case, the agency noted.
At 8:30 a.m., Pearson Airport officials said the investigation was still ongoing outside Terminal 1 departures and that passengers and vehicles were being rerouted to enter and exit through Terminal 1 arrivals.
