The theft of a pick-up truck from a Whitby driveway last week resulted in the arrests of five suspects.

Around 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 24, Durham Regional Police got a call about a Dodge Ram truck missing from a driveway on Vipond Rd. in a suburban area of Brooklin.

When officers arrived, they took down suspect descriptions from the victim. According to police, they found the truck around the corner on Montgomery Ave.

Officers boxed the truck in so it couldn’t drive off and arrested five men without incident.

The group, all from Quebec, consisted of Amine el Azrak, 19, Jokency Cineus, 19, Danis Coutu, 26, Rafik Giri, 20, and Jermemy Trudel, 19. All five have been charged with theft of a motor vehicle and possession of an automobile master key. All five have been released with conditions.

“Investigators would like to remind everyone to take extra precautions to protect your vehicle from theft,” police said, “Anti-theft steering wheel locks add an extra layer of protection as well as keeping your keys away from the front door of your home.”

They also advised;

  • parking in a well-lit area,
  • not leaving the car unsupervised while running,
  • investing in anti-theft devices,
  • not hiding a car key outside
  • putting the key fob in a faraday bag
  • leaving car keys away from doors and windows.
