Firstprize Charlotte hoping for top prize at Ajax Downs

Firstprize Charlotte, who had a smashing career debut victory in the fastest Trial for the Ontario Bred Futurity, will try to take down the top prize in the $63,360 final Wednesday at Ajax Downs.
The third running of the Ontario Bred Futurity, recognizing two year-old Quarter Horses bred in the province, is at 300-yards and is race 7 on a super card of Quarter Racing with a first race post time of 1:30 p.m.
Firstprize Charlotte is owned and was bred by Richard Wincikaby of New Liskeard and she flew to a two-length win in the second Trial under jockey Cory Spataro. The daughter of Ontario stallion Dashair earned an 88 impressive speed index for her handy victory over stablemate Da Zoom, ridden by Cassandra Jeschke and also owned by Wincikaby.
Incredibly, Firstprize Charlotte is one of five juveniles who qualified for the 10-horse final for trainer Michelle Woodley, who prepares her horses with partner John McInerney at their farm near Erin. Four of them are owned by Wincikaby.
“John told me that Firstprize Charlotte is doing awesome and came out of her Trial win great,” said Spataro. “As long as she runs the same race she did in her Trial, have some racing luck, she can win it.” Firstprize Charlotte drew post position 2 for Wednesday’s final.
Spataro also rode Sour Candy, the first Trial winner, who led all the way to win by a neck with an 86 speed index. The chestnut gelding by Jess Good Candy held off Woodley’s own horse, Silver Lyning, who closed fast for second. The fifth Wincikaby/Woodley 2-year-old in the field in Quick Asa Hiccup, who was fourth to Sour Candy. Ismael Mosquiera, currently the leading rider at Ajax Downs, picks up the mount on Sour Candy and they will start from post nine. Tony Phillips will ride Silver Lyning (post 4) and Eddie Walton and Quick Asa Hicccup have the rail.

One of the few 2-year-olds in the Futurity final not from the Woodley barn is Had to be Ivy (Josh Scott, post 8), who was a good third to Sour Candy for Carol and Jaime Robertson. Had to Be Ivy is a full sister to Horse of the Year Had to Be Ivory.
