Fireworks Allowed During Chinese New Year Celebrations in Mississauga

Mississauga residents are permitted to welcome the year of the monkey in with fireworks during Chinese New Year celebrations on Monday, February 8.
During a City Council meeting on October 28, a temporary exception was made to the City’s fireworks-related by-laws. The approved exception allows fireworks to be set off on holidays including Chinese New Year. This exception is in place for one year which started on November 1, 2015.
On September 16, 2015 a request was made at Council to amend all by-laws associated with the setting off of fireworks displays to make an exception for both Diwali and Chinese New Year celebrations. Prior to the exception, relevant by-laws only allowed fireworks to be set off during Victoria Day and Canada Day unless a permit had been issued by the City’s Fire Chief.
Over the course of the year and acting on direction from Council, Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) will put together a report that looks at the feasibility and impact of allowing residents to use fireworks on Diwali and Chinese New Year.
Mississauga residents are reminded that:
- fireworks cannot be set off on a public street or roadway;
- fireworks can only be set off in a park if a permit is obtained from the Fire Chief; and
- fireworks should only be purchased from a licensed retailer permitted to sell fireworks to the general public within the City of Mississauga as per By-law 1-06 and By-law 340-01.
