One person is dead following a fire at a two-storey apartment building in Central Hamilton Wednesday evening (March 31).

Hamilton Fire crews were called at 5:20 p.m. to 301 Mary Street, near Barton, to reports of a structure fire.

When crews arrived on the scene, they saw heavy smoke coming from an apartment on the second floor and they received reports that a person was still inside.

According to a Hamilton Fire press release, firefighters immediately initiated a search and rescue operation to locate the person.

“During these operations, a deceased person was located by firefighters,” the release said. No other injuries have been reported.

The fire was then quickly brought under control but not before the apartment sustained significant damage. Other units in the building also sustained smoke damage but the estimate on the extent of the damage to the building as a whole “is not known at this time.”

“Given the nature of the fire, the Office of the Fire Marshal has been called and is responding to assist Hamilton Police Services with the investigation,” the release said.

Hamilton Police continue to hold the scene as the investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
