One person required a trip to hospital, while an apartment unit sustained “significant damage” during a blaze in central Hamilton this afternoon.
At approximately 3:21 p.m. on April 18, crews from Hamilton Fire responded to a report of a structure fire at 319 Barton St. E., which is between East Avenue and Emerald St. in Ward 3. Crews were told by dispathers that a person might have still be inside. Smoke was visible from a second=storey window of a 2½-storeys building containing apartments over commercial.

The fire was brought under control, although firefighters encountered high heat, heavy smoke and flames on the second floor. The occupant was able to self-evacuate.
In a release, Hamilton Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe said a second-floor apartment suffered “significant damage” and other areas of building sustained “both smoke and water damage.”
The cause of the fire and damage estimate has not yet been determined.
