Hamilton Fire Department (HFD) crews battled back a multiple-alarm blaze at a townhouse on the mountain Wednesday night (Sept. 22), the cause of which remains under investigation.

An HFD press release said that crews were called just before 9:30 p.m. to reports of a structure fire at 55 Towercrest Dr. near Upper Wellington.

When crews arrived, they are reported to have found a “well-involved fire with heavy flames visible on the second floor of a three-storey, mid-block townhouse unit,” the release said.

“Given the conditions that were present, the alarm was upgraded bringing resources from across the City to the incident.”

The residents of the home were able to get out safely and no injuries have been reported.

When more crews arrived on the scene, the fire was quickly brought under control, the HFD release notes, but not before the home sustained significant fire and smoke damage throughout.

“Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the unit of origin,” HFD said. “Dollar loss to the involved unit has not yet been determined but based on the significant damage throughout the unit it will be substantial.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
