A structure fire on Hamilton’s East Mountain Monday afternoon (June 21) sent two people to hospital and caused significant damage to a home.

According to Hamilton Fire Department Chief, Dave Cunliffe, emergency services were called shortly after 3 p.m. to reports of a structure fire at 824 Upper Ottawa St. near Mohawk Road.

“As crews were responding they reported heavy smoke visible in the area,” Cunliffe said in a press release.

“On arrival crews confirmed a well-involved fire in an extended garage that was attached to a one storey frame house. The fire was quickly extending into the main roof of the house.”

First responders upgraded the alarm to bring in more crews from across the city to help bring the blaze under control.

In the meantime, two of the home’s residents were able to get out of the house on their own but they had to be treated on-site by paramedics for smoke inhalation and were eventually transferred to a local hospital.

No other injuries were reported.

Crews were able to bring the fire under control in about 15 minutes, according to Cunliffe, but not before the bungalow sustained significant damage from the fire and water damage from crews’ efforts to extinguish it.

“ Damage to the overall home is extensive,” he said in the release.

“Damage estimates and cause have not yet been determined.”
