Over a dozen people have been arrested after a rowdy night of fireworks in a Brampton park on the Victoria Day long weekend.
Chinguacousy Park was closed on Sunday evening and everyone inside the park was ordered by Peel Regional Police to leave the area following dozens of complaints.
Police say people were shooting fireworks at each other at the large and unsafe gathering, and a spokesperson says several warnings were issued.
There was also a small fire started by the fireworks, which was extinguished by police, PRP Const. Tyler Bell-Morena said in a statement to INsauga.com.
Some people were escorted out of the park by police, and a total of 13 people between the ages of 17 and 25 have been arrested.
“Charges range from possession of weapons for a dangerous purpose, using explosives with intent to cause bodily harm, carrying concealed weapons as well as trespass, liquor and cannabis act offences,” Bell-Morena said.
The park has since reopened.
Chinguacousy Park will see added security on Canada Day to avoid the repeat behaviour of the unruly crowd that took over the celebrations last year. The city plans to spend more than $200,000 — an increase of $80,000 — to add security personnel and put up more fencing for crowd control at Chinguacousy Park on July 1.
