The federal government is suspending incoming passenger flights from India and Pakistan for the next month as cases of COVID-19 surge in both countries.

The decision comes after India announced more than 300,000 new cases of the virus on Thursday (April 22).

At least 32 flights from Delhi and two from Pakistan have landed in Canada in the last two weeks carrying dozens of passengers who later tested positive for the virus.

The flight ban will take effect as of 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, and last for at least the next 30 days.
