The federal government has announced it is providing additional funding to Canada’s major airports to enhance screening for COVID-19 among travellers entering the country.

On Friday (August 13), Omar Alghabra, Minister of Transportation, announced the government is launching a new contribution funding stream under Transport Canada’s Airport Critical Infrastructure Program.

This new funding stream will provide $81.6 million to support Canada’s major airports, which will be used to enhance COVID-19 testing and screening infrastructure.

This includes establishing COVID-19 testing and screening facilities, as well as improving airport flow and zoning to better improve foot traffic, and facilitate physical distancing.

In total, 26 airports will benefit from this funding, including Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga.

“As we move forward with the safe, gradual return of activity in the aviation sector, both in Canada and internationally in a way that continues to support the health, safety, and security of all Canadians, it will be imperative that we continue to ensure a vibrant and competitive Canadian air sector,” Alghabra said in a news release.

“This funding will allow major airports across Canada to invest in the infrastructure and tools needed to help re-invigorate the aviation industry and allow Canadians to feel safe when they travel.”
