Investigators in the U.S. are offering a $50,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of the accused Canadian ringleader of an Indian gang that’s taken credit for multiple Brampton murders.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Justice Department announced charges against Lawrence Bishnoi, a gangster who is in prison in India, and his alleged lieutenant Satinderjeet Singh “Goldy” Brar. The pair are accused of ordering the 2023 murder of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.
Nijjar helped organize a Khalistan referendum vote in Brampton before he was murdered – a movement which looks for the state of Punjab to break away from India and become a Sikh- run state.
The Bishnoi gang is accused of assassinations, shootings, murders, kidnappings, extortions, assaults, and trafficking narcotics and weapons. U.S. authorities say Bishnoi and Brar oversaw the transportation of 49 kilograms of cocaine that was intercepted in California and was intended to be sent to Canada in 2024.
Brar was on Canada’s list of most-wanted criminals 2023, and is the alleged mastermind behind the killing of Brampton rapper Sidhu Moose Wala in India in 2022. Bishnoi members have claimed responsibility for the killing of Brampton businessman Harjeet Singh Dhadda, who was gunned down in a Mississauga parking lot, and extortions in Peel Region.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday announced a $50,000 reward in exchange for information leading to Brar’s arrest. Investigators say Singh is based in the U.S. and is the alleged leader of the gang across North America. An indictment against a total of 37 suspects says such high-profile crimes were used to terrorize and extort Indian community members.
The department said law enforcement had seized approximately 1,000 kilograms of cocaine and a dozen firearms as part of “Operation Hard Ball.”

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown applauded the indictment on Wednesday and said it was “great news for public safety,” adding that the gang “has terrorized Canadians.”
The gang was labelled a terrorist organization last year after an RCMP report found members of the gang were acting on behalf of the Indian government. Brown had previously called for the Bishnoi gang to be labelled as terrorists, and has himself been the target of violent threats.
Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau linked agents of the Indian government to the 2023 murder of Nijjar – an accusation India denied and led to diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
Violent extortions linked to the gang have been an ongoing issue for police and residents in Caledon, Brampton and Mississauga for years, as well as in B.C. and Alberta. The number of extortion-related crimes in Peel Region spiked since 2020, with 490 crimes reported in 2024. Peel police created an Extortion Investigative Task Force in 2023 in response to threats against members of the South Asian business community.
