This morning’s fatal crash on Hwy 401 in Pickering has resulted in charges against a Whitby man.

OPP Media Officer Sgt. Kerry Schmidt announced the crash shortly before 7:30 a.m. on December 30. He said a car was driving eastward on the westbound lanes of Hwy 401 around 5 a.m.

The car struck another vehicle head-on near the Brock Rd. on-ramp. The cars collided with enough force to shatter the front of both cars and flip one over on its back. A third vehicle also became involved though police were unclear how.

After first responders arrived they pronounced one man, 55 of Whitby, dead. Another man, 28 of Ajax was seriously wounded in the crash.

Police closed the westbound lanes for several hours until about 1 p.m to investigate.

Hours after the update, around 5:30 p.m. the OPP announced they had charged an unnamed man from Whitby, age 25, with impaired driving, dangerous driving, and refusing to provide a breath sample that resulted in death and bodily harm.

Impaired driving causing death carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison to life if the driver is convicted.
