The investigation into yesterday’s fatal crash in north Oshawa has revealed new details about the circumstances behind the collision.

Shortly after 10:30 a.m. on December 5, a silver BMW X-5 SUV was headed south on Simcoe St. As the SUV approached Howden Rd. just north of Hwy. 407, it crossed the centre line and crashed head-first into a northbound delivery truck.

The BMW driver, 73, was killed in the impact. The delivery driver was unharmed.

Ten minutes before the crash, a concerned citizen called Durham Regional Police on the BMW. The caller reported the SUV was driving “erratically” near Simcoe St. and Raglan Rd, about two kilometres north of the crash site.

The Collision Investigation Unit responded to the crash scene to investigate and closed down the intersection for several hours. The roadway has since re-opened, but the investigation continues.

Investigators are conducting a post-mortem examination and a toxicology screen of the BMW driver.

Anyone who witnessed or recorded the crash can call D/Cst. Scott at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5217 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
