A famous Hamilton doughnut shop will be closing up shop in January, and it’s because of its popularity.

Grandad’s Donuts owner Barb Aiello took to social last month to remind the public that the shop will remain open during renovations through 2022, but it will close mid-January so work can be completed.

“Hello donut lovers! We know there’s some confusion going around about our renovations and we’d like to remind everyone we are currently OPEN,” wrote Aiello. “We aren’t closing for renovations until mid January, so there’s plenty of time to stock up until then!”

The retro doughnut shop on James St. North has seen business boom. So much so that customers are sometimes turned away at noon because Grandad’s has run out of doughnuts.

“Sorry for selling out earlier today! We know we sell out often, but we ask that customers be aware we are making these in a small kitchen by hand. As we get busier (amazing!) we can’t, unfortunately, up our production more than we already can,” wrote Aiello in an August Facebook post.

Grandad’s is expanding its kitchen and storage to meet the doughnut demand.

“We’re aware of our supply issues, and know it’s frustrating to come down in the afternoon and not be able to get what you’d like, and for transparency’s sake, we are making efforts to fix it!” the post continued.

“Thank you everyone for your patience through the fall, and for your support over the summer!”

It’s not often we can celebrate the closing of a business, but in Grandad’s Doughnuts’ case, it’s because people can’t get enough hand-crafted cherry sticks and cinnamon twists. And in a few months, once renovations are complete, there will be even more sweet dough to go around.
