Family-owned grocery chain opening new location just north of Toronto

As one grocery store closes its doors, another well-known Ontario chain is preparing to take its place in King City.

Longo’s recently announced plans to open a new store at 1700 King Rd. in Fall 2026, replacing Coppa’s Fresh Market, which officially closed their doors on May 19.

A social media post by the company quickly sparked reactions online, with many residents expressing excitement about the change. “King City is going to love Longo’s!” one Facebook user wrote, while another said the new opening was “very much needed in King City.”

The grocery chain currently operates 43 locations across southern Ontario, primarily throughout the Greater Toronto Area. The family-operated business traces its roots back to 1956, when brothers Tommy, Joe and Gus Longo opened their first fruit market in Toronto after immigrating from Sicily, Italy.

According to the company’s website, what began as a small neighbourhood produce store has since expanded into one of Ontario’s largest grocery chains, with more than 6,000 employees and locations stretching beyond the GTA into communities such as Ajax, Guelph and Newmarket.

Longo’s is known for its fresh produce, locally sourced meats, sustainable seafood, prepared foods, bakery items, deli counters and grab-and-go meal options through Longo’s Kitchen. Many stores also feature floral departments, pharmacies, and Corks beer-and-wine bars.
