13-year-old Mahkai died after being stuck by a car while he was riding an electric scooter in Brampton on June 14, 2023.

The death of a 13-year-old boy hit by a car while riding his scooter in Brampton has members of the community rallying around the boy’s mother.

The 13-year-old named Mahkai was hit by a black Nissan Altima while riding his electric scooter last Wednesday (June 14) at the intersection of Orangegrove and Sugarhill Drives, according to police and a friend of the family.

Mahkai suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash and was rushed to hospital, but died of his injuries on Monday.

Mahkai’s death has left his single mother dealing with “the worst any parent can go through” according to a family friend but members of the community are lending support to the family.

“We’re incredibly heartbroken about Mahkai but also extremely thankful for the outpouring of love and support from friends and strangers alike who have shared their unconditional kindness with us in our time of grief,” reads a statement from the family posted to a GoFundMe page.

The fundraiser was started to cover Mahkai’s medical costs from the crash, but will now be used for funeral expenses. The fundraiser had over $21,000 of a $15,000 goal as of Friday morning.

“We would also like to thank the Doctors and nurses at Sick Kids Hospital for the care and effort they gave to Mahkai,” the page reads.

Police said the driver of the Nissan that struck Mahkai remained at the scene of the crash. A police spokesperson confirmed to insauga.com that the investigation is ongoing but no charges are pending.
