It will be family first for an Oshawa retiree after she won $50,000 in the May 28 Ontario 49 draw.

Arunthathy Manimaran is celebrating after winning the second prize in the springtime draw and said she will take her time before deciding what to do with her windfall.

Manimaran has been playing ONTARIO 49 for the past year. “I like the fun it adds to the end of my week,” the 67-year-old mother and grandmother said, adding she had scored some smaller prizes in the past.

“When I checked my ticket and saw that I’d won a prize of $50,000, I had to double-check it,” she said while visiting the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to collect her winnings. “I had my ticket validated at the store and the lottery terminal froze. It was so exciting!”

She then broke the news to her family. “They were overjoyed for me.”

ONTARIO 49 is $1 per play and the draws take place every Wednesday and Saturday. The winning ticket was purchased at Shoppers Drug Mart on Taunton Road East in Oshawa.
