A Mississauga-based organization is warning people about a fake job posting.

Peel Learning Foundation, a charitable organization, issued an alert about the posting that mimics their website.

The organization raises funds to enable Peel District School Board students to achieve personal excellence by providing resources that help them overcome barriers.

Last week, a website was up that purported to be the foundation and offered jobs. The website had the same name and logo as the foundation and looked authentic.

It posted a “Student Accessibility Support Specialist (Remote)” job.

The job description said employees would work from home and help children with disabilities overcome social isolation. Candidates could earn “$450 per task, with the flexibility to complete up to 2-3 tasks each day.”

It then prompted people to start the interview process.

The fake website prompted people to start the interview process.

This type of scam targets and takes advantage of people looking for a job, according to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website. Typically, people receive an unsolicited email or text message about a job opportunity. The victim could be asked for banking information or to install software.

The foundation said last week that they are “aware of the aware of fraudulent job offers that have been circulated through fake email addresses and a website.”

They first became aware of the scam in July after receiving an inquiry about a job offer, a spokesperson for the foundation told told INsauga.com.

At that time, there were no current job openings.

“The Foundation immediately responded to all queries related to the fraudulent job offer and posted warnings on the Foundation’s social media accounts about the fraudulent job offer,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Peel Learning Foundation advised people to refrain from clicking any links and to reset their email password.

They have continued to post messages to warn individuals about these fraudulent job offers.

They also contacted the domain name registrar and web hosting company where the
fraudulent website was registered and hosted, and convinced them to remove the website.

“We’ve advised that anyone who gave their personal banking information to the
scammers to immediately contact the police,” the organization said in the statement.

“We sincerely appreciate the diligence of the individuals who reached out and brought
this issue to our attention, and we will continue to do our best to ensure the safety and
protection of our community.”
