While residents who fail to clean up after their pets in Milton can be a nuisance to other members of the community, what they may not know is that they could face penalties if they’re caught.

In an effort to keep the community clean, the Town of Milton often issues reminders on social media. Recently, the Town issued a tweet reminding residents to clean up after their dogs.

According to Mary Beth McMullen, Manager of Licensing and Enforcement for Milton, the tweet was meant to act as a reminder for Miltonians to be “good neighbours.”

McMullen also confirmed that while the Town recently issued a reminder about this issue, there has not been an increase in community requests for service or complaints at this time.

So, what exactly are the consequences for being caught not picking up after your pet in Milton?

Well, McMullen says that it could result in potential penalties such as a hefty fine of $150.

The Town’s Animal Control By-law is to blame for this consequence, which states that “no owner of an animal, shall fail to immediately collect, remove and properly dispose of excrement left by said animal in a public place or on the private property of another person.”

According to McMullen, if the Town’s Municipal Law Enforcement Unit receives complaints, an officer will attend the area, conduct patrols, educate pet owners and in some cases even issue penalties for non-compliance.

“We want residents to take pride in their community, and to do so, we all have to chip in to keep our community clean,” McMullen told insauga.

There are several other ways residents can help keep the community clean such as disposing of garbage properly, securing waste on pick-up days and reducing, reusing and recycling.
