Social media users across Canada are having issues with both Facebook and Instagram as the apps’ parent company appears to be having technical difficulties.

Many users of the popular social media applications voiced their frustrations online on Tuesday with reports of users not being able to log in to their accounts, send messages or view their profiles.

Several users posted on X (formerly Twitter) that they thought their accounts may have been hacked, but social media outage tracking website Downdetector.ca reported a massive spike in problem reports around 10 a.m. made to Facebook and Instagram’s parent company, Meta.

The outage appears to be impacting both personal and business accounts on Facebook, while some Instagram users have been able to log in but not see any posts, updates or messages.

London-based internet monitoring firm Netblocks said on X that four Meta platforms — Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Threads — are “experiencing outages related to login sessions in multiple countries.” But the firm, which advocates for internet freedom, said there was no sign of “country-level internet disruptions or filtering,” which are typically imposed by governments.

Log-in issues have been reported coast-to-coast in Canada and around the world. Some users were able to log back into their Facebook accounts by around 11:30 a.m., but issues are still being reported on Instagram.

Andy Stone, Meta’s head communications, acknowledged the issues on X and said the company is “working on this now.”
