Cold Mississauga

Environment Canada is warning Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon, Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills residents of extremely cold temperatures starting tonight and lasting into Saturday morning.

The national weather agency says hazardous conditions are expected beginning tonight, with wind chills of between minus 30 and minus 35 Celsius. The extreme cold is anticipated to last overnight into tomorrow morning.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk,” the warning from Environment Canada reads. “Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

“Watch for cold-related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes,” the warning continues. “Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.”

Environment Canada says extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frostbite and hypothermia.
