Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon residents are being urged to dress for extremely cold conditions this evening and into tomorrow morning.

Environment Canada issued an extreme cold warning alert earlier today, noting “very cold wind chill values developing tonight into Saturday morning.”

The warning continues: “After temperatures rapidly fall through the day today, wind chill values near minus 30 (Celsius) are forecast to develop overnight.”

The Canadian weather agency says a reprieve from the extremely cold conditions is expected to begin Saturday morning.

Environment Canada says extreme cold puts everyone at risk and that people should watch out for the following conditions:

  • shortness of breath
  • chest pain
  • muscle pain and weakness
  • numbness and colour change in fingers and toes

“Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm,” officials say. “The outer layer should be wind resistant.”

Officials say skin should be covered up as much as possible, as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

People are also reminded to keep their pets indoors during such cold spells.
