One driver in Hamilton was left with some hefty fines and a towing bill Thursday morning.

Hamilton Police tweeted that a driver with an expired permit and no insurance was pulled over on Barton St. East.

The photo accompanying the tweet shows a Mazda 3 on the bed of a tow truck, indicating the driver was towed at their expense.

In Ontario, driving without insurance can lead to a fine between $5,000 and $25,000 for the first offence. Getting caught a second time can cost a driver up to $50,000 in fines, and their driver’s license can be suspended for up to one year.

Drivers caught on the road without a valid permit can be fined up to $1,000.
