Enbridge Gas and Ajax Fire are still on the scene of a natural gas leak in the Church Street and Delaney Drive area that raised a stink through a large section of town and forced local schools to shelter in place Wednesday.

Ajax Fire Department said a main distribution line was punctured. To ensure gas supply to the area, a temporary bypass line was installed Wednesday night while Enbridge employees got to work Thursday morning to begin repairs.

There is no risk to residents, Ajax Fire said in a statement, and the shelter-in-place order was lifted yesterday, allowing students attending at least seven local schools – including Pine Ridge and Pickering high schools – to go home at the usual time.

Some residents, however, are complaining that the odour still persists in the area.

The Town of Ajax is expected to provide an update once the area has fully re-opened.
