Cellphones and other devices will sound with an emergency alert test across Ontario today.

The alarm is part of the Alert Ready system test happening across Canada.

In Ontario, the blaring tone will sound in a test at 12:55 p.m. today (May 10) on compatible cellphones, radio and TV.

In a real emergency, the alert would provide potentially life-saving information, according to the Alert Ready website.

The emergency could be a natural disaster, an amber alert, or a terrorist threat to name a few. The alerts immediately let people know when to take action to stay safe.

The test is also scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 15 also at 12:55 p.m. in Ontario.

The test follows Emergency Preparedness Week, a national event that educates communities across the province about actions people can take to prepare for emergency situations.
