It is likely that medical officials in Niagara Region would prefer no new COVID-19 cases but today’s (August 17) new cases count of eight has at least one positive.

It’s single digit. After five days in a row of double-digit new cases, there is at least some solace to be found there.

However, there are now 128 active cases in Niagara whereas at this time two weeks ago, that number stood at just 44, the lowest in 2021.

Almost 85 per cent of the present cases are or are “likely” to be the Delta variant.

St Catharines continues to lead the way with 37 active cases, followed by Niagara Falls at 27 and Thorold and Welland, both at 16.

Wainfleet is no longer the only zero case municipality in Niagara as Port Colborne joined it today. The remaining six municipalities in Niagara have between one and 10 cases.
