There were 21 new COVID-19 cases in Durham Region yesterday, with Oshawa (6), Ajax (5) and Pickering (5) reporting the highest numbers.

Whitby, for the first time this week, reported zero new cases of the virus. Uxbridge Township was the only other community to report zero new cases.

Seven people remain in hospital – all from Oshawa and Ajax – with two in ICU.

There are 144 active cases of the virus with 11 active cases of the Delta variant.

Oshawa’s 18-plus vaccination rate finally crested the 70 per cent mark (Durham does not break down the 12-plus vaccination rate by municipality), while the Durham rate is 75 per cent for 18-plus and 74.2 per cent for 12-and-over.

It should be noted that the 12-17 demographic, despite becoming eligible for vaccines later than other age groups, is now 64.2 per cent fully vaccinated, which is higher than the 18-29 group and almost at par with 30-39 year-olds. First dose rates for 12-17 year-olds is higher than both other demographics.
