Durham Regional Police chief takes on Ontario role

Durham Regional Police Service Chief Peter Moreira has a new hat to wear, that of president of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police.

Moreira assumed the role this week for 2026-27 during the association’s annual general meeting in Niagara, succeeding Chief Mark Campbell of the Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service, who will continue to serve on the board of directors as past president.

“I’ve dedicated my career to policing and am proud to serve alongside exceptional leaders across Ontario,” Moreira said. “It is an honour to serve as OACP President, and I’m committed to advancing policing priorities through thoughtful collaboration that strengthens community safety and well-being across our province.”

Moreira has served as Chief of the Durham Regional Police Service since March 2023 and has more than 30 years of policing experience, having joined the Toronto Police Service in 1991 and holding senior roles across frontline, investigative, and executive operations.

A strong advocate for collaboration and community partnerships, Moreira is committed to modernizing policing to respond to the evolving needs of growing and diverse communities. His career highlights include leading the Homicide Squad and the Integrated Gun & Gang Task Force, as well as playing a leadership role during the 2022 Emergencies Act response.
