Durham Region introducing mandatory staff vaccination policy.

Durham Chief Administrative Officer Elaine Baxter-Trahair said all staff, including students and volunteers, will be required to disclose their vaccination status by October 20, with proof of full vaccination status by December 20.

“We have an important role to play in helping to stop the spread of COVID-19, especially as variants of concern continue to spread,” she said. “We need to make sure staff are working in an environment that safeguards their health and safety.”

Baxter-Trahair said the Region Durham Region will fulfill its Ontario Human Rights Code obligations to accommodate staff who are legally entitled to exemptions, including those who are unable to be vaccinated for medical reasons.

“Our community has shown great strength and resilience through the COVID-19 pandemic. People have come together to take care of one another; respect public health measures; protect the most vulnerable; and roll up sleeves to reduce pressure on our health-care system,” she added. “We have seen how mass vaccinations help to reduce transmission. This new policy is one of the most effective ways to help keep people safe, as we work towards resuming full-service operations.”
