Getting caught in traffic led to a seven-figure thrill for a Durham Region couple

Donna Blackwood and Jermone Carty, of Ajax, won a Maxmillions prize worth $1-million in the June 15 Lotto Max draw. Carty was taking a traffic-induced detour on his way to work when he chose to check the numbers he had picked.

“I thought I might as well check my ticket while I’m sidetracked,” Carty said. “When I saw ‘Big Winner,’ I didn’t believe my eyes. I gave my ticket to the cashier and when I saw ‘$1 million,’ I knew it was real and thought, ‘oh my God!’ ”

The couple say there are occasional lottery players who sometimes play Quick Pick and other times choose their own numbers.

Blackwood said he thought her partner was having her on when he called to inform her of the big win. When she realized it was real, she started to cry.

“I couldn’t wait to get home to hug my husband,” she said.

“We are so thankful for this incredible blessing. The gratitude we feel is overwhelming. This is one of the most glorious moments we’ve had together,” she added.

The pair plan to pay their bills and invest in their future.

“Our family will be financially set for anything that may come our way. We feel so humbled by this blessing,” Blackwood said.

The winning ticket was purchased at Pioneer On The Run on Fairview Street in Burlington.
