Dufferin OPP charge 10 from Brampton and seize eight guns after New Year’s Day shooting

Police say they’ve charged 10 people from Brampton, seized eight firearms and laid dozens of charges after gunshots rang out in a rural field on New Year’s Day.

Just before 6:00 p.m. on Jan. 1, officers from the OPP Street Crimes Unit and Dufferin detachment say they were called to a rural property some 70 kilometers north of Brampton after receiving noise complaints of gunshots in Melancthon Township.

When officers arrived on scene they reportedly heard the sound of gunshots coming from a large field on County Rd. 17, and police say officers were able to locate several people on the property.

Police say they charged 17 people with 28 firearm-related offences as a result of an investigation.

Eight firearms were also reportedly seized by police, including several handguns and shotguns.

The charges include carless use of firearm, weapon, prohibited device of ammunition, and possession of prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition.

Ten of the accused are from Brampton.

And while most of the individuals were from other parts of Ontario including Cambridge and London, one of the accused is from Montreal and another is from as far away as Calgary.

A police spokesperson said investigators are trying to determine why the individuals were gathered and why the shots were fired.

Police say one person has yet to be arrested and charged in relation to the incident.

The accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville in March.
