Drugs and stolen handgun from Florida found in a traffic stop, Brampton resident charged

A Brampton resident is one of three people facing drug trafficking and firearms charges after a traffic stop in Cochrane.

The charges come after police stopped a vehicle on Highway 11 South in Cochrane on May 7 around 11:30 p.m., the James Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said in a press release.

The driver was arrested on an outstanding warrant, and police seized drugs suspected to be cocaine, Percocet, fentanyl, and cannabis with a total estimated street value of $400,000, OPP said.

Two other occupants of the vehicle were also arrested.

Police also seized cell phones, approximately $6500 in Canadian currency, and a loaded handgun. The handgun was stolen out of the state of Florida, police said.

Jahnai White, 25, of Brampton was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance – opioid
  • Trafficking a Schedule I substance – opioid
  • Trafficking a Schedule I substance – cocaine
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – opioid
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
  • Transport firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition in a careless manner
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a prohibited or restricted weapon
  • Possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
  • Possession of a firearm, prohibited or restricted weapon obtain by crime
  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm
  • Possessing cannabis for the purpose of selling
  • Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available
  • Failure to comply with release order – other that to attend court
  • Speeding, 25 km/h over posted speed limit
  • Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit
  • Class G1 licence holder – unaccompanied by qualified driver
  • Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available

The two others facing drug trafficking and firearm charges are Voshawn Grant, 24, of Waterloo, and Dontae Richards, 26, of Kingston.

All three people appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Cochrane on May 8 and remain in custody, OPP said.
