Peel, police, speeding, stunt, driving, caught, charged, Mississauga

UPDATE: In a recent video posted on social media, Constable Ty Bell-Morena of Peel Regional Police provided an update on day two of a reckless and stunt driving enforcement operation at Ridgeway Plaza in Mississauga. Here’s what he said on Saturday (Sept. 14):

“Tonight, I’m pleased to announce we’re seeing more compliance and far fewer violations observed by officers. This is telling us that our presence here is having an impact. Finally, this is exactly what we want to see.”

He explained that the goal isn’t to issue tickets, but rather, to ensure people can come to the plaza, have a good time, and stay safe, which is the primary focus of the operation. He added, “It’s no surprise Peel Police will be out in numbers—we’ve been telling everyone all week, it’s not a secret.”

Const. Bell-Morena also mentioned that signs were posted around the area, advising the public of increased enforcement. Despite these warnings, some drivers continue to disregard traffic laws.

“I’m on a traffic stop right now, where I’m issuing a ticket for somebody running the same stop sign they ran yesterday. You can’t make this stuff up,” he said.

“We’re going to be here and we’re going to be ticketing you if you break the law. Enjoy the plaza, but follow the rules.”

Police are cracking down on reckless driving and street racing at Ridgeway Plaza in west Mississauga in response to ongoing safety concerns from local residents.

Constable Ty Bell-Morena of Peel Regional Police said in a video posted on social media that more than 40 traffic stops were conducted Friday night, with multiple charges laid and several vehicles impounded as part of a strategic enforcement operation.

Police did not specify the exact charges laid following these traffic stops.

In addition, officers dispersed large and disruptive crowds in the area.

In one case, a driver, whose identity has not been released by police, was caught travelling 98 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The driver’s licence was suspended and the vehicle was towed.

In Ontario, stunt driving is defined as travelling at:

  • 50 km/h or more over the speed limit where the posted limit is above 80 km/h
  • 40 km/h or more over where the limit is 80 km/h or less
  • a speed of 150 km/h or more on any road or highway

Police say drivers caught speeding and stunt driving can face a number of penalties, including a license suspension, vehicle being impounded and fines up to $10,000.

In more serious/repeat offender cases, jail time is a possibility.

“This behaviour will not be tolerated anymore,” Bell-Morena said, urging visitors to the plaza to follow traffic laws and signage.
