A woman was seriously injured Tuesday night (Jan. 4) when a motorist driving the wrong way on Hamilton mountain access struck her car head-on.

According to Hamilton Police, a vehicle entered the downbound lanes of the Claremont Access just before 9:30 pm and started driving in the wrong direction, swerving to avoid oncoming (downbound) traffic.

The car then struck one of the downbound vehicles head-on. The driver, a woman in her mid-60s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries but they are not considered life-threatening.

The driver who was driving the wrong way, a person in their early 20s, has been charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Police said in an email to IntheHammer.com that impairment has been ruled out as contributing to the crash.

The access remained closed for several hours after the crash for the investigation but reopened early Wednesday.
