No charge for officer in life-threatening pedestrian crash in Brampton

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has released more information on a hit and run that claimed the life of a female cyclist in Mississauga.

The female cyclist was hit and killed on Airport Road between Thamesgate Drive and Slough Street in Mississauga, Peel Regional Police said early this morning.

The collision reportedly happened before 5 a.m.

The SIU said they are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the cyclist’s death as the driver of the vehicle that fled had a police interaction a few hours before the collision.

Shortly after 3 a.m. on Aug. 23, a Peel Regional Police officer spoke with the driver of a vehicle parked in the area of Airport Road and Morning Star Drive, the SIU said in their preliminary report.

When the officer went back to the police cruiser to verify the information, the car fled the scene, the SIU said.

Then, just before 4 a.m., the vehicle was found on Goreway Drive, south of Rexdale Boulevard. The SIU doesn’t say if the police interacted with the driver again or if the driver fled from police again.

Around 4:30 a.m., a cyclist was located in the area of Airport Road and Thamesgate Drive, the SIU said.

She had been struck by the vehicle and was lying on the grass, the SIU said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is responsible for investigating circumstances involving police that have resulted in a death or serious injury, or if a firearm was discharged at a person.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
