A Hamilton officer is under investigation by Ontario’s police watchdog after a man was shot while behind the wheel of a vehicle and later died.

Wednesday afternoon at around 5:15 p.m., officers responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle on Strathearne Pl near Upper James — across from Southern Pines Golf and Country Club.

After receiving plate information, Hamilton Police say the vehicle was suspected to have been stolen and officers were dispatched to the area.

The SIU says an officer approached a vehicle that was parked behind the suspected stolen vehicle before the driver drove toward the officer. That’s when the officer reportedly discharged his firearm and shot at the man behind the wheel. According to the SIU, “the vehicle travelled a short distance and left the roadway before coming to a stop in a wooded area on Strathearne.”

“The man was seriously injured,” according to the SIU.

He was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead shortly before 7 p.m.

The other occupant in the vehicle, a 29-year-old woman, was not injured in the incident. She was arrested at the scene and charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of stolen property under $5,000.

The SIU says five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
