A driver faces charges after stopping for a turtle on an Ontario highway.
Emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 60 in North Algona-Wilberforce Township shortly after 6 p.m. on June 10, the Ontario Provincial Police said.
North Algona-Wilberforce is about 145 kilometres west of Ottawa.
The OPP said an eastbound vehicle slowed or stopped on the roadway while a turtle was crossing. A second vehicle travelling behind was unable to avoid a collision and struck the first vehicle, police said.
There were no reports of serious injuries.
The highway was closed for several hours to allow for the investigation and cleanup.
A driver from Ottawa was charged with careless driving.
The OPP said stopping in a live lane of traffic creates a significant risk.
“If you encounter wildlife on the roadway, do not stop in traffic lanes. Continue to a safe location off the roadway and contact police if assistance is required,” police said.
